Can too much sleep be bad for you?

Science Café

  • Topic: Can too much sleep be bad for you? and Novel Bright Light Treatment
  • When: September 9th
  • Time: 6:00 pm
  • Location: Za’s Pizza (2930 Devine Street)
  • Speakers: Shawn Youngstedt, USC Dept. of Exercise Science

Over 20 studies have consistently shown that long sleep (8 hours or more per night) is associated with mortality. Like other healthy behaviors (such as sunlight exposure and food intake), it seems that long sleep can be hazardous in excessive amounts. Thus, moderate restriction of sleep could be an effective way to prolong life.

Antidepressant effects of bright light exposure are well established. The common biochemical similarity of anxiety and depression (they are treated with the same drugs) provided rationales for expecting that bright light can also reduce anxiety.

Come join us on September 9th and find out how much sleep and how much light you should get for optimum health!
